Smash Plates and Skip the Bar at Break Room LA in Van Nuys

Some nights out end with a quiet drink. Others end with you swinging a sledgehammer at a stack of dishes. At Break Room LA in Van Nuys, guess which one we’re talking about.

Break Room LA is a rage room, an axe throwing range and a paint room all under one roof, at 6473 Van Nuys Blvd. It started with two friends who each had their own idea of fun. One had run an escape room business and wanted a place where guests could make noise, let loose and smash things. The other loved axe throwing and interactive entertainment. Put them together and you get what Break Room LA told us they were after: “a place where people could socialize, celebrate, and have an incredible time without needing to visit another bar.”

What you can do

The Rage Room is the main event. You suit up in safety gear and smash glassware and ceramics to your heart’s content. They recently launched a Destruction Package with 45 glass and ceramic items, and they’re running a limited-time promotion with more breakable items at the same package prices, so ask about it when you book. If you’d rather get your stress out with a sharp edge, there’s axe throwing too.

Feeling creative instead of destructive? The Paint Room is a space made for making a mess, and there’s a Vehicle Wreck Experience for anyone who wants to go even bigger.

Every session is private, so it’s just you and your group, whether that’s solo, a date, friends, family or coworkers. The team walks you through everything, hands you the safety gear and makes sure you’re comfortable before you start. Nobody’s judging your swing. They also host birthdays, corporate team-building and private parties, and they’ll bring a portable Rage Room to your location.

Before you go

Booking ahead is encouraged, though their site says walk-ins are welcome, with a possible wait or a sold-out slot. You’ll sign a waiver online before your visit. According to their website, activities start at $25, the rage room and axe throwing are open to ages 10 and up, the paint room to ages 2 and up, and anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian with them. Their site lists hours of 4 to 10pm Monday through Thursday, noon to 10pm Friday and Saturday, and noon to 8pm Sunday, but check with them before you head out since hours and prices change. You can reach them at 818-923-7513.

A heads-up about private events

We’d rather you hear this from us. Break Room LA doesn’t sell or serve alcohol. The one exception is private events: guests booking the facility for a private event can bring a limited amount of their own alcohol, with Break Room LA’s prior approval. So if you’re going for a regular session, or booking your own event, alcohol only shows up if you choose to bring it. If you’re planning a party and want to keep it fully dry, just don’t ask. And if you’re invited to someone else’s private event, it’s worth asking the host first.

One of the original goals behind Break Room LA was an exciting social experience that didn’t revolve around drinking. As they put it, “the activities themselves are the entertainment.” That’s our kind of night out. Go smash something.
